At this point in time, this breed of dog has about 300 dogs in North America. Several breeders and I are currently working towards following German standards for training and breeding. These standards will be reinforced and encouraged through a registry, much like the Kurzaars and Draathars. The VDW is the governing body in Germany for the Wachtelhund and will be the ruling authority for the North American dogs at this time. 	OakRidge Kennels is located in Galesburg, Michigan on the east side of Kalamazoo. We are a small kennel, promoting the German breed: Deutscher Wachtelhund. This dog is a medium sized spaniel, used as a versatile hunter for all game animals. It's abilities include blood trailing, birds and fur hunting, retrieving, and has a trademark not found normally with other types of "birddog" breeds, barking on trail. I welcome you to come in and browse around! History: As a child, I read many books that focused on hunting dogs, I think my favorite was "Big Red" by Jim Kjelgaard. Since that time, hunting behind dogs has always been my goal and passion. Unfortunately, during my youth, I did not have a true, bird hunting role model nor the environment typical to promote such, so my hunting with a dog was limited to a mutt or two and a lab. About ten years ago, I was able to purchase my first, real bird dog, a German Short hair! A few years later, I bought a female, planning to eventually start my breed lines from this stock. Well, as fate would have it, I made a phone call one day. Fueled by curiosity, I wanted to know more about this Wachtelhund dog that I saw in the back of a magazine. Needless to say, the GSP's have been given away and I stand proudly behind a dog that I now believe can and will do it all!
